Training of English and Cultural Knowledge for Tourism in Malang by Faculty of Cultural Studies Universitas Brawijaya
In the framework of Excellent Research of Higher Education (ERHE) 2017, a team of researchers from the Faculty of Cultural Studies University of Brawijaya (FCS-UB), chaired by Ika Nurhayani, S.S., M.Ed., Ph.D., accompanied by Dra. Sri Endah Tabiati, M.Ed., Hamamah, S.Pd., M.Pd, Ph.D., and Aris Siswanti, S.S., M.Pd. conducted a research and training entitled “Good Governance in Tourism to Face ASEAN Economic Community (AEC): Training of English and Cultural Knowledge for Tourism in Malang”.
The background of the theme was taken because the researchers considered that many tourism workforces, such as tour guide or other tourism labours, in Malang required foreign language competence, especially English, as well as insights and knowledge of the local culture as said by Aris Siswanti, S.S., M.Pd.
Seeing that demand, the first training was held on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 in FCS-UB Hall at 10:00 a.m. In this training, the researchers provided questionnaires and conducted English pretest. The results of the questionnaire and the pretest would be used to prepare the next training material. “After this first stage of training, hopefully, there is a map to formulate objectives and training materials for the future training”, said Aris Siswanti, S.S., M.Pd.
In this training, the researchers cooperated with the Department of Culture and Tourism (Disbudpar) Malang, accompanied by Mrs. Ani Rahmawati from Tourism Division of Disbudpar Malang. This first training was attended by 10 participants from various tourism objects in Malang, such as Jodipan, Glintung, Lawang, Bounderland, and Candi Badut. We hope that the number of participants will increase in the next stage of training. [DT/MSH/PSIK FIB]
