Study Visit by English Language Education FCS – UB to English Language Education Study Program Universitas Sanata Dharma Yogyakarta
English Language Education Study Program of FCS-UB held a study visit to English Language Education Study Program of Universitas Sanata Dharma (USD) Yogyakarta (05/3/2018). This event was held in order to prepare the accreditation of English Language Education Study Program FCS-UB in 2020. “This visit is not only to learn from PBI Sanata Dharma, but also as an initiation of cooperation between the two study programs,” said Dr. Esti Junining, M.Pd, the Head of English Language Education Study Program of FCS-UB. According to decree number 227/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-XVI/S/XI/2013, English Language Education of USD has achieved A accreditation.
English Language Education Study Program of FCS-UB was welcomed in Campus 2 USD Yogyakarta by the Head of PBI Study Program USD, Yohanda Veniranda, Ph.D. In this chance, the English Language Education of USD shared not only their information but also the programs they applied. USD has Lecturers Community Services (LCS) program, where they also included the undergraduate and graduate students in the community service program. This program is equivalent with KKN for students. The LCS program scale is Asia-Pacific. “Last year, two of our lecturers along with two undergraduate students and two graduate students did a community service in Thailand,” said Yohana.
Moreover, there are dissimilar things applied in the thesis program. Before, two lecturers supervise the process of writing thesis, now there is only one lecturer for each student as the supervisor. To guarantee the quality of the thesis, there is a desk evaluation system in which three lecturers become the evaluators. The three lecturers are not known by the students and they become the judges team whether the thesis is decent enough to be trialed in the oral defense as said by F. X. Ouda Teda Enaa, S.Pd, M.Pd, Ed.D., one of the lecturers of English Language Education of USD who is also the Vice Rector IV of USD.
There are also activities that are done by the students and for the students. One of the activities is students’ reflection activity, which is held since the first semester until the seventh semester. The students are given a workbook, in which they must fill in during one semester. The theme of each workbook is various from individual charisma until pedagogies ability and social awareness. Furthermore, there is a tutorial activity where the senior students are assisting their junior for grammar and pronunciation. “The pronunciation tutorial is given to the students of first and second semester, while the grammar tutorial is given to the students from first until third semester,” said Yohana. The tutor students are not only appreciated by the honorarium, but also in form of point. “We impose the point for the student’s achievement. The point can be used for the registration of Yudisium, and they have to get 10 points,” she added. This point system is not only given for the academic achievement but also for non-academic achievements. “All of these activities not only result in students’ achievements, but also in their character building,” said Yohana.
