English for Future 2018: Learning English Accents!
As the students of English Literature Study Program who always deal with English in their everyday life, the Students Association of English Literature Study Program or known as ESA (English Student Association) held a Seminar entitled English for Future 2018 (EFF 2018) on Saturday (14/4/18). The Seminar and Workshop had been done annually by ESA. In EFF 2018, the theme used was about the use of English Accents. EFF has held various themes, such as Public Speaking, and Writing Skills, especially Creative Writing and Business Writing.
This seminar themed “Get your accent, get your world” had two speakers to deliver their material. The first speaker is Yuta Otake who is an American came from New York, and right now he is working for the Embassy of the United States. Through Yuta Otake, the participants of the seminar learned about the pronunciation of American English and learn about various cultures of America that are not exposed to us through the popular films.
Yuta said, “Learning about accents of a country would be more interesting if we like something from that country, such as dances, music, movies and others. When we are interested in their culture it will be easier for us to learn the English accents from that country.” The participants were also very enthusiastic with the presentation told by Yuta Otake.
The second session was continued by a British speaker, Radhy Ampera. He is an Indonesian student who was once living in England for more than 10 years before moving back to Indonesia. So, his British accent is very obvious. In this session the participants learnt about the culture of England, such as their obsession with tea, and also learnt about the differences between American English and British English. Radhy provided examples of the differences by giving the examples of vocabularies—the spelling and pronunciation—and how they are different from each other. In the second session, the participant could see the differences of accents used by the speakers: American and British.
EFF is a regular event that is held to introduce the fields of English studies; it is not only about grammar but also the different fields that are related to English which will be useful for the participants of the Seminar. This event is also held by the English Club of ESA who has already sent lot of delegations in English Competitions such as Debate, Storytelling, Newscast and Radio Drama. (Via/DT/MSH/PSIK FIB)
