English Literature FIB UB Prepared Alumni to Face the World of Work

On Saturday (28/07/2018), Ikatan Alumni Sastra Inggris (IKASI) Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) held the Across Generations Alumni Reunion of English Literature Study Program FCS UB, which was held in Building A FCS UB. IKASI is a forum for alumni to stay in touch and exchange information about job vacancies and scholarships. The purpose of this event is translation and human resources workshops in order to improve the quality of graduates of English Literature Study Program FCS UB.

The event, which took place in room 2.11, was started at 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and invited alumni from batch 2000 to 2017. The number of alumni who came was about 60 people. Some alumni, who had come, went directly to the photo booth for doing a group photo.

Right at 9.45 a.m., the MC opened the event followed by an opening speech by Yusri Fajar, M.A. as the representative of alumni gathering committee, then welcome speech by Juliati, M.Hum. as the Head of English Literature Study Program and the last speech was by Isti Purwaningtyas, M.Pd. as the Head Committee of IKASI. Then it continued to the main event, which was divided into two sessions. In each session, the speaker performed in a talk show. The first talk show was entitled “Translation as a Professional Job”, and the second talk show was titled “Conquering Job Interviews”.

The first talk show was led by Anna Wiksmadhara as a Professional Translator of HPI (Indonesian Translation Association). The event was also attended by Vice Head of HPI and the Head of HPI Regional Commission of East Java. Anna Wiksmadhara provided material around the profession, industry and organization in the world of translators. At the first five  minutes, she gave the mini quiz to audience. They must answer some questions consisting of two spelling choices and the audience should circle which the correct spelling is. For example: praktek or praktik, ijasah or ijazah, miliar or milyar . There was one participant that had almost all-correct answer and she was rewarded a gift (book) by her.

The second talk show was by Yusuf Wibowo as Human Resources Specialist from PT. Shica Jaya Sentosa. He shared his experiences in interviewing people, providing knowledge on how to deal with employers and the work environment tips to be prepared before being interviewed by HRD. This was very useful for alumni who were looking for work or who were already working. Then the event was closed with discussion and sharing session. (Binda/DT/MSH/PSIK FIB)
