In August 2018, the Community Service Team of Anthropology Study Program Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB), led by Dr. Hipolitus Kristoforus Kewuel, S.Ag, M.Hum., went to Gunungsari Village. The title of this community service is “Workshop on the Formation of Badan Usaha Milik Desa (BUMDES) in Gunungsari Village, Batu City in order to Create Community-Based Tourism through Stakeholders Involvement” which was initially a continuation of the Anthropology’s Bakti Budaya Program. According to Dr. Hipolitus Kristoforus Kewuel, S.Ag, M.Hum, community service is an activity that must be endless.

The Community Service Team arrived at Gunungsari Village and was greeted by the local citizens. The event which took place at the Village Hall was joined by 30 people from Gunungsari. The event was opened with a speech by Dr. Hipolitus Kristoforus Kewuel, S.Ag, M.Hum. The Community Service Team invited two presenters; they were from Batu City Tourism Office and Andreas Eddy Susanto, a member of the DPR Commission II Finance and Banking as an activist for the BUMDES approach to external parties to support this community service activity.

This community service has numerous phases in five years. The 1st year is the stage for mapping tourism prospective points. The 2nd year is intended to construct 23 tourism possible points concentrated on three villages in Gunungsari. The 3rd year is the stage of the project assessment. In this trial phase, the community team was divided into two teams consisting of seven groups. Two groups support improving the internal performance of the village enterprises of BUMDES and five other groups assist hamlets in carrying out tourism potential practices that have been planned. If the people of Gunungsari do well, then the 4th year can be sustained for the developing stage and the 5th year for the reinforcement phase. For this purpose, at the workshop, Andreas Eddy Susanto delivered a subject entitled “The Role of Stakeholders in Strengthening BUMDES”.

The main purpose of this community service is to help the community to empower their potential to make their area to be a tourist village because Batu is the second most visited city after Bali. This service is also intended to empower people with the awareness of the potential nature.
“Besides that, the benefits of this community service are also to reduce the unemployment of the community,” said Reza Ramadhania, a student of Anthropology Study Program FCS UB who participated in this community service team. (Binda/DT/MSH/PSIK FIB)
