The 3 in 1 program held by Master of Linguistics Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) has ended with a workshop by two phonologists. They are a practitioner Ferdinan Kurniawan, Ph.D and a senior lecturer Pittayawat Pittayaporn, Ph.D from Chulalongkorn University which is the best university in Thailand.
This 3 in 1 Program was held for five days (16-20/11/2019) and was divided into two sessions, a Workshop on Phonetic Research with Praat and another Workshop on Diachronic Phonology. The chairperson of this program is Ika Nurhayani, Ph.D., who is the Head of Master of Linguistics Study Program FCS UB as well as a lecturer of phonetic and phonology.
The Workshop on Phonetic Research with Praat was held on Monday Saturday – Monday (11/16-18/2019) in the Movie Room, building A FCS UB. The workshop enclosed trainings to record sound with the Praat software, to store it in a WAV file, to process and to analyze the resulting spectrogram. The use of Praat software to analyze human voices has been utilized not only by linguistics, but also by sound software makers for computer and mobile phone applications, as well as speech and neurology therapists.
The workshop on Diachronic Phonology was delivered by Pittayawat Pittayaporn, Ph.D on Tuesday – Wednesday (11/19-20/2019). Diachronic phonology discusses the change of sound in language over time. Diachronic phonology can also be used to determine the origin of a tribe by reconstructing the ancient language of the nation.
This 3 in 1 program also led to an initiation of collaboration between FCS UB and the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, which is planned to begin with an official visit of the FCS UB delegation to Chulalongkorn by next year. (PS.ILing/DT/MSH/Humas FIB)
