Cak Kartolo and Mbah Barjo Jiono when Receiving the Sabda Budaya Award from the Dean of FCS and Chairman of the UB Senate

Sabda Budaya Award 2022 was held again by the Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB). In this fourth year of its event, Sabda Budaya Award was given as an appreciation to artists and writers from East Java.

“This year’s theme follows the 13th Anniversary of FCS UB’s theme which is the birth of FCS. It is formulated into ‘Jalma Guna Gapuraning Bumi‘, meaning 1931 Saka or 2009 AD,” said M. Fathoni Rohman, M.Pd., the chief executive of Sabda Budaya Award FCS UB 2022.

The award for this year’s event, which was held on Saturday (5/11/2022) at UBTV, was given to three categories. The awardee for the Literature Category was Okky Madasari, a novelist from Magetan. The second awardee for the Traditional Art Category was Cak Kartolo, a Ludruk artist from Surabaya who devoted his life to the world of art. While the awardee of the Creative Process Incentive Category was Barjo Jiono, an artist who maintains and preserves the Jambuwer Malangan Mask Dance.

“FCS UB needs to pay attention to artists and writers. It is good that we do not only pay attention to the physical form, but also to scientific studies. For example, Mbah Barjo Jiono, who is not only the awardee of the award but also acts like the facilitator of a Malang cultural development laboratory,” Fathoni explained.

The Dean of FCS UB, Hamamah, Ph.D., hopes that FCS will participate in preserving traditional arts and also in re-promoting existing traditional arts. Moreover, FCS can also be closer to artists and cultural practitioners.

Cak Kartolo’s Performance

“Because the scope of FCS’ study is closely related to artists and cultural observers, hopefully, they (the awardees) can participate in supporting education at FCS,” she said.

UB’s Rector, Prof. Widodo, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D.Med.Sc., also expressed his hope, “Hopefully, this Sabda Budaya Award can encourage artists and cultural practitioners to continue to do their best in preserving Indonesian culture.”

Sabda Budaya Award is an annual event held by FCS UB by giving awards to practitioners of art, literature, and culture. This award is expected to be able to increase the motivation of the actors to work and also to produce collaborations between the arts and academia. It is recorded that several performers of arts, literature, and culture are the recipients of this award, including previously Wina Bojonegoro and the late Prof. Budi Dharma. [dts/aaz/PR FCS]
