FCS UB Awarded Four Sabda Budaya Awards 2023

This year, the Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) held the 5th Anugerah Sabda Budaya (Sabda Budaya Awards) event with the theme “Sasmitaning Praja, Janma ning Pandhita, Memayu Hayuning Bawana,” which means “remembering history, cultivating wise thinking, and bringing life to world welfare.”

“The theme we have chosen for this year holds a profound meaning, covenying an important message in an era marked by uncertainty and rapid change. We must try to balance between technological progress and the preservation of our environment and culture,” stated Hamamah, Ph.D., Dean of FCS UB.

This activity took place on Saturday (9/23/2023). It served as an appreciation event for artists and writers in East Java. Through this event, it is hoped that the artists and writers within the East Java community would be given more attention and recognition.

It is hoped that the Anugerah Sabda Budaya event could serve as an inspiration for artists and writers in East Java to continue producing their work as they represent an invaluable national asset. Their works have become an essential part in preserving and safeguarding our country’s culture and heritage. Likewise, writers have made significant contribution to the development of our national civilization with their works. The dedication, struggle, and movements that have been taken by traditional artists, writers, and cultural community groups in East Java would forever hold a special place in the heart of our people, and they also have the power to inspire the younger generation, especially within East Java.

Anugerah Sabda Budaya ini adalah bagian dari rangkaian acara Dies Natalies FIB UB ke-14, yang pada tahun ini turut dimeriahkan dengan berbagai kegiatan hingga Minggu (24/9/23) nanti. Kegiatan tersebut meliputi, Sendra Tari Rahwana Gandrung, Grand Launching FIBMagz, Orasi Budaya oleh Direktur Jenderal Kebudayaan, Hilmar Farid, M.A., Ph.D., Orkestra Saung Angklung Mang Udjo, dan puncaknya adalah pemberian Anugerah Sabda Budaya kepada seniman tradisi, sastrawan penulis, dan kelompok komunitas budaya Jawa Timur terpilih. Tidak hanya itu, rangkaian kegiatan ini juga dimeriahkan dengan kegiatan Career Expo, Beauty Class x Y.O.U., dan sekaligus acara Peresmian Fasilitas Penunjang Center of Excellence.

Anugerah Sabda Budaya diawali dengan sambutan Dekan FIB dan Rektor UB yang sekaligus membuka acara. Pada kesempatan ini Dekan FIB UB menyampaikan bahwa kegiatan Anugerah Sabda Budaya yang terangkai dalam Dies Natalies ke-14 FIB UB dapat menjadi bukti wujud bakti nyata FIB UB pada masyarakat terutama kepada para seniman tradisi, sastrawan penulis, dan kelompok komunitas budaya Jawa Timur yang telah berjasa dalam menjaga kebudayaan dan peradaban melalui karya nyatanya.

Acara dimulai dengan sambutan Dekan FIB UB, Hamamah Ph.D., yang mencanangkan perubahan dan harapan baru FIB UB sebagai Center of Excellence Pusat Rujukan Budaya Jawa Timur dalam bentuk Digital. Mengambil jargon culturally enriching, scientifically excellence, FIB UB menunjukkan arah baru menuju digital humanities yang kritis, humanis, dan berkelanjutan. Semua langkah menuju perubahan yang sudah dilakukan FIB UB selama ini telah diwujudkan menjadi karya digital yang didukung oleh kerjasama nasional dan internasional, dan didokumentasikan dalam FIBMagz, majalah FIB yang turut di-launching pada acara ini.

The Sabda Budaya Award was part of a series of events celebrating the 14th Anniversary of FCS UB, which was filled with various activities until Sunday (9/24/2023). These activities included Ravana Gandrung Dance Performance, the Grand Launching of FIBMagz, Cultural Oration by the Director General of Culture, Hilmar Farid, M.A., Ph.D., Mang Udjo’s Saung Angklung Orchestra. The highlight of this event was the awarding of the Sabda Budaya Awards to traditional artists, literary writers, and selected East Javanese cultural community groups. Additionally, the series of activities also featured a Career Expo, Beauty Class x you, and the Launching of the Center of Excellence Supporting Facilities.

The Sabda Budaya Award started with remarks from the Dean of FCS and the Rector of UB, who also opened the event. On this occasion, the Dean of FCS UB conveyed that the Anugerah Sabda Budaya event, which was incorporated into the 14th Anniversary of FCS UB, serves as evidence of FCS UB’s genuine commitment to the community, especially to traditional artists, literary writers, and East Java cultural community groups who have contributed to preserving culture and civilization through their dedicated work.

The event then proceed with opening remarks from the Dean of FCS UB, Hamamah Ph.D., who announced transformative changes and new aspirations for FCS UB as a Center of Excellence for the East Java Cultural Reference Center in Digital form. Embracing the jargon of “culturally enriching, scientifically excellence,” FCS UB showed a new direction toward critical, humanistic, and sustainable digital humanities. All the steps towards this change that have been taken by FCS UB so far have been transformed into digital works supported by national and international collaborations and documented in FIBMagz, FIB’s magazine, which was launched during this event.

The existing cooperation initiated by FCS has achieved significant development and implementation, ranging from domestic to international collaboration with various educational, research, industrial, and government institutions. At the Anugerah Sabda Budaya event, the act of unification of cooperation was carried out with representatives from organizations who have recently partnered with FCS UB, including PT Sands Talk Indonesia, Malang Regency Industry and Trade Office, Malang Regency Tourism Office, Malang Regency Research and Development Agency, Malang Regency Government Cooperation Section, Malang Regency Regional National Craft Council, Blitar Regency Tourism Office, and PT Golden Tekstil Indonesia.

The main event was the presentation of the Sabda Budaya Awards to traditional artists, writers, and East Java cultural community groups. The awardees were selected based on the curatorial board’s assessment, which was formed by the FCS UB team. The evaluation was conducted using an in-depth curation process on the selected four leading nominations. Literature Category, Traditional Arts Category, Creative Process Incentive Category, and Fine Arts Category. In the Literature Category, the Sabda Budaya Award was given to Muna Masyari, in the Traditional Arts Category the award was honored to Suwito HS, while in the Creative Process Incentive Category the awared was given to the Kirun Arts Padepokan (PADSKI), and in the Fine Arts Category to (the late) Teguh Sentosa.

The awarding event took place at the UB TV studio and was also attended by the members of the UB community, educational institutions, government, collaborators from FCS UB partner companies, as well as artists, writers, and cultural figures from East Java. During the event, the Rector also emphasized the importance of continuing this activity in the future, as to highlight UB’s role in serving and contributing to society, particularly in the social humanities field.
