Presentation of One of the Main Keynote Speakers, Hamamah Ph.D., Dean of FCS UB
The Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) once again held the International Conference Entitled Language, Literary, and Cultural Studies (ICON LATERALS) III 2022. This activity was carried out online, offline, and hybrid from 5 to 6 November 2022.
ICON LATERALS Coordinator, Dr. Ismi Prihandari M.Hum said this year’s ICON LATERALS was titled “Building Interdisciplinary Perspective in Literature, Linguistics, and Cultural Studies”. In this activity, there were at least five keynote speakers from various countries. Those five main speakers are Hamamah Ph.D. from Universitas Brawijaya, Professor Michael Harrington from the University of Queensland, Professor Tony McEnery from Lancaster University, Karl Ian Uy Cheng Chua Ph.D. from Ateneo de Manila University, and Li Yunjing Ph.D. from Tianjin Foreign Studies University.
In addition to the five main keynote speakers, this activity was also attended by 96 presenters and 35 participants. According to Dr. Ismi, the presenters did not only come from various universities in Indonesia but also from several other countries. “Such as Malaysia, America, Japan, Australia, and, China,” she detailed.

The sub-themes discussed in ICON LATERALS III include Literature and Media Culture, Literature and Mobilities, Critical Discourse Analysis, Applied Linguistic Studies, Language, Identity and Gender, and Multimodal or Digital Literacy. Then there are the sub-themes Bilingualism and Multilingualism, Language Maintenance and Planning Policy, Second Language Learning in the Digital World, Translation and Interpreting Studies, and Corpus-based Studies. Then there are also sub-themes Language and Tourism, Intercultural Communication and Global Citizenship, and Cultural Studies.
With this activity, Dr. Ismi hopes that FCS UB can be recognized more in the world. Meanwhile, the participants can increase their knowledge related to linguistics, culture, and literature.
On another occasion, the Dean of FCS UB, Hamamah Ph.D., explained that this international seminar aims to achieve Key Performance Indicators or Indikator Kinerja Utama (IKU). This includes supporting UB in achieving IKU in the aspect of international seminars.
“Then in the seminar process, there are also lecturers who write and present research results together with partners from abroad and others, or from outside UB,” she said.

Furthermore, Hamamah hopes that this activity will continue to be carried out in the coming year. This is not only for ICON LATERALS but also for other international seminars such as the International Conference on Advances in Humanities, Education and Language (ICEL), the International Seminar on Cultural Sciences (ISCS), also for the International Conference on Language, Literature, Education, and Culture (ICOLLEC).
According to Hamamah, ICON LATERALS III activities, including three other international seminars, managed to gather number of participants. The ICON LATERALS III activity, for example, was able to gather participants from eight countries. Then the ICEL II event was attended by participants from four countries. Then ISCS II participants from nine countries, while ICOLLEC II from three or four countries.
“This international seminar activity at FCS UB gets a good response and we work on this committee one time, but we get four seminars. So I hope this can be done continuously next year,” she concluded. [dts/aaz/PR FCS]
