The Occupational Health and Safety (K3) Team of the Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) carried out earthquake disaster response simulation activities as a form of increasing awareness and preparedness of the entire academic community towards potential disasters that can occur at any time in the campus environment.
The simulation, which was conducted on Tuesday (5/6/2025), started from the 6th Floor Meeting Room of Building A FCS UB, followed by the evacuation process to a predetermined gathering point. This activity involved active participation from the education staff and the faculty security. The whole process is packaged in an educational video that can be used as continuous learning material.
In the simulation, important steps were conveyed in the event of an earthquake. The academic community was supposed to: (1) do not panic, remain calm, and immediately exit the room in an orderly manner, (2) avoid using the elevator and follow the evacuation route to the emergency stairs, (3) do not carry excessive items and avoid crowding when descending the stairs. On the emergency stairs, there should be no items that hinder the evacuation process.
Officers from the FCS UB K3 Team will be on hand to assist with the evacuation process. The officer will provide first aid if an incident occurs during the evacuation process and coordinate with the security team to contact the emergency call. Upon arrival at the gathering point, officers will count the number of people to ensure no one is left in the building.
The gathering point is a location that has been determined as a safe place for the academic community to gather after being evacuated. With a gathering point, it is easy for the emergency response team to count the number of people who have been evacuated and ensure no one is left in the risk area.
This simulation is part of the effort to build an inclusive and collaborative K3 culture. Everyone on campus is expected to care for and be responsible for their safety and others when facing emergencies.
Through this simulation, FCS UB emphasizes that safety is a shared responsibility. It is not only the duty of security officers or medical personnel, but all elements of the campus, including students, lecturers, and education staff, have an important role in ensuring that the evacuation process runs safely and effectively.
This simulation is also a reminder that awareness of potential disasters must be built continuously in campus life, thus creating a safe, resilient, and risk-responsive learning environment. [dts/PR FCS]
