Universitas Brawijaya (UB) has held a press conference related to the demise of a student of the Study Programme of English Language Education (SPELE) Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) UB, NWR, on Sunday (12/5/2021) at 1 p.m. Located in the 8th floor of UB’s Rectorate Building, this press conference presented the Dean of FCS UB, a representative of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, UB’s Legal Experts, and a representative of UB’s Legal Services Office.

On this occasion, UB expresses deep condolences for the passing of NWR, also appreciates and supports the quick steps taken by the Indonesian National Police in handling the case of the death of NWR related the personal relationship with RB, one of the members of the Indonesian National Police.

UB also calls for the whole community to respect NWR’s family’s rights by providing wise information so as not to cause a confusion; urges UB academic community to enforce the law and/or ethics in the society.

In early January 2020, NWR reported a sexual harassment case that she had experienced to FCS UB functionaries. The perpetrator, RAW, was her senior at the SPELE FCS UB. FCS UB quickly followed up this case up by forming an Ethics Commission. After RAW is proven guilty, UB provides sanctions and supervision to RAW, as well as support to NWR by providing counseling under applicable regulations. FCS UB maintains the confidentiality of NWR’s identity so that the academic process can run well.

“We were surprised because NWR never told us about problems related to her personal relations with RB,” he added.

In August 2021, NWR consulted with Dian Mutiara Women Crisis Center regarding her problems related to RB, but before the mitigation process, NWR had passed away.
