Prof. Dr. Abdul Hadi Widji Muthari or also known as Abdul Hadi W.M. is the awardee of the 3rd Sabda Budaya Award in the Category of Literary Arts. In the framework of the 11th Anniversary of the Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS), Universitas Brawijaya (UB), Abdul Hadi W.M. who is a writer, humanist, and philosopher also deliver a Cultural Oration.

Abdul Hadi W.M. was born in Sumenep on June 24, 1946. He is a descendant of a Chinese merchant who moved and settled in Sumenep. He graduated from the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Padjajaran, Bandung. He took the Study Program of Anthropology for a year (1973-1974) to attend the International Writing Program at Iowa University, United States. His education did not stop there, he had the desire to continue his education in Hamburg, Germany to study literature and philosophy.

In 1992, Abdul Hadi W.M. had the opportunity to take a master’s degree and a doctorate in philosophy from the Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang, Malaysia. Apart from being a writer, philosopher, and humanist, he is also listed as a lecturer at the Faculty of Philosophy of Universitas Paramadina, Jakarta, an extraordinary lecturer at the FCS Universitas Indonesia (UI), a graduate lecturer at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta, The Islamic College for Advanced Studies (ICAS) London, Jakarta Campus.

At the age of 74, he has contributed a lot in the field of literature. This is evidenced by his works that have been engraved in the hearts of literary connoisseurs, including: Laut Belum Pasang (1971), Potret Panjang Seorang Pengunjung Pantai Sanur (1975), a collection of poems entitled Anak Laut Anak Angin (1984), Meditasi Kembali ke Akar Kembali ke Sumber (1999), Modin Karok (1983), Islam Cakrawala Estetik dan Budaya (1999), Tasawuf yang Tertindas (2001) and many more.
