In the series of the 10th Anniversary of the Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB), A Cultural Discussion was held on the third day, Wednesday (10/30/2019) with the theme “Multicultural Identity in National Dynamics”. The subject was delivered by Yusri Fajar, M.A., a lecturer of Study Program of English FCS UB. The dialogue was attended by the majority of English Language Education Study Program students. Through the discussion, Yusri invited students to care for diversity in three ways, namely communication, reconciliation, and synergy. Considering many conflicts that have occurred in Indonesia, for example in Kalimantan and Papua involving two different tribes, he initiated the importance of maintaining unity.
“It is important for us to build an awareness that we are living in a diverse nation. So, with the diversity of ethnic groups, if we are not good at controlling emotions, caring for brotherhood, preserving tolerance, then conflicts can occur,” he said.
Furthermore, Yusri delivered a message that the differences can actually make people love each other and regard each other as brothers, so that, there will be no acts of mutual hatred and discrimination.
According to him, the forms of discrimination are very diverse, including bullying which needs to be avoided. For him the most important thing is to accept differences. Thus, diversity will continue to be maintained. (DT/MSH/Humas FIB)
