To support language learning and develop creativity, the Language and Creative Economy Service (LBEKRAF) of the Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) offers various language classes for the public, one of which is the Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) class.

BIPA classes are structured to teach the Indonesian language and introduce Indonesian culture to participants. With this approach, participants learn the language in theory and gain a deep understanding of the traditions, arts, and cultural values inherent in Indonesian society.

One way to provide hands-on experience is through batik classes. This class allows participants to be involved in the process of making batik, an Indonesian cultural heritage that has been recognized worldwide.

The participants were taught to ink batik wax using canting, following the pattern that had been made earlier. After the drawing was completed, they colored the fabric using painting and dyeing techniques.

Molly, one of the participants from the United States, was enthusiastic about this experience.

“It’s really fun because I’ve never had an experience like this before. This is my first time making my own batik,” she said excitedly.

“We always look at batik styles across Indonesia. Now we can be directly involved in the making process. I think this art fits perfectly with the culture of Indonesians who are very patient,” added Kyle, Molly’s husband, who was also excited about the experience.

Joon Hyuk, another participant from South Korea, added, “I think this batik class is quite important to get to know Indonesian culture in a fun way.”

Fatmawati, M.Sn., lecturer of the Fine Arts Study Program and teacher of the batik class for BIPA participants, was enthusiastic about the participants’ great interest in learning.

“The more foreigners learn about batik, the more excited I get. Communication problems to explain local terms sometimes arise. However, it’s all worth it when they feel happy and satisfied with the class,” Fatma said.

With the high enthusiasm of the participants and the dedication of the teachers, the batik class for BIPA LBEKRAF FCS UB participants has succeeded in becoming a cultural bridge that strengthens relations between Indonesia and various countries. It is hoped that this program will continue and grow to generate more opportunities for foreign speakers to get to know and appreciate Indonesian culture. [trans.acl/ed.vidya/PR FCS]
