For article to be published in reputable journals, lecturers must have understanding, skills, and awareness of the importance of quality in writing good articles. To further improve it, the Humanities Science Laboratory (LIH) Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) organized a Journal Article Coaching Clinic for FCS UB lecturers.

The coaching clinic had been held four times, on July 18, August 2, August 14, and August 31, 2023. The objective of this coaching clinic was to provide FCS UB lecturers with guidance and consultation on writing journal articles worthy of publication in Scopus-indexed journals and can be submitted to other journals as well.

“Initially, this event was limited only to 30 journal articles. However, the Dean responded well in order to accommodate as much articles as possible. Finally, a total of 90 articles were gathered. I think the collection of 90 articles is already a great achievement,” stated Prof. Zuliati Rohmah, Head of LIH FCS UB, who was the chief executive.

“We hope that in the second review, there will be some journals that can be submitted. Up to the fourth review, all can be submitted to Scopus-indexed journals,” she added.

The event, in which was held in the hall and classrooms of Building B FCS UB, invited eight reviewers. They were Prof. Ali Saukah, M.A., Ph.D. from Universitas Muhammadiyah of East Kalimantan (Education), Prof. Diah Ariani Arimbi, S.S., M.A., Ph.D. from Universitas Airlangga (Culture and Literature), Hatib Abdul Kadir, Ph.D. from UB (Culture), as well as reviewers from Malang State University; Prof. Dr. Yazid Basthomi, M.A. (Education and Linguistics), Prof. dr. Hj. Utami Widiati, M.A., Ph.D. (Education), Evi Eliyanah, M.A., Ph.D. (Culture and Gender), Dr. Nurenzia Yannuar, M.A. (Linguistics), and Dra. Nunung Suyati, M.Ed., Ph.D. (Education).

Apart from being accompanied by eight reviewers, the lecturers were also accompanied by eight submission companion teams from FCS UB, who ensured the review from start to finish.

Hamamah, Ph.D., Dean of FCS UB, explained that FCS is relatively a new faculty at UB. It will be 14 years old this year (in August).

“We need to develop many things such as facilities and infrastructure, science and quality of education. We have tried everything, including national and international accreditation. Thank God we have gone through the international accreditation processes. Ten study programmes at FCS UB have undergone AQAS international accreditation, seven have received accreditation certificates, and three are still waiting for the results,” explained Hamamah.

“Another thing we are developing is the scientific potential of the academic community, specifically the lecturers. As such, the form of scientific competence is verified from the quantity and quality of publications. We have tried a variety of scientific activities to improve the scientific competency of the lecturers, including organizing study groups, scientific discussions, international seminars, 3in1 activities, and now we are performing coaching clinics for journal articles,” she added.

“Previously, we have sought funding for research starting from the faculty and university level, holding workshops on research methods, reviewing proposals and reports, and so on. This year we are taking more steps to ensure that the findings of this research can be made available to the public in their respective fields through coaching clinic journal articles,” she stated.

In addition to increasing the scientific competency of lecturers, there were also demands from IKU and for this year, every lecturer was required to have international publications.

“Hopefully, the activities that we undertake through these processes will produce the results we hope for; we can publish in international journals with the assistance of the reviewers,” hoped Hamamah. [dts/PR FCS]
