The Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya (FCS UB), held an international conference which presented reputable speakers from within and outside the country. This year’s scientific activities were quite different from previous years, as the conference activities took place at the Grand Whiz Hotel Nusa Dua, Bali – Indonesia.

The scientific conference was divided into two conference agendas. The first was ICOLLEC (The International Conference on Language, Literature, Education, and Culture) with the theme “Bringing Innovation and Collaboration in Language, Literature, Education, Art and Culture Studies for Sustainable Society.” The second was ICEL (International Conference on Advances in Humanities, Education, and Language) centered around the theme “Supporting Language Education Advancement with Metaverse Technology.”

This year, the international scientific conference FCS UB collaborated with The 14th AISOFOLL (Annual International Symposium of Foreign Language Learning) SEAMEO QITEP in Language. SEAMEO QITEP, or Southeast Asia Ministers of Education, Quality Improvement of Teachers and Education Personnel, is a regional center established by Southeast Asia Ministers of Education on July 13, 2009. The main focus of this institution is to develop the quality of language teachers (Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA), Arabic, Japanese, German, and Mandarin) along with educational staff.

The meeting of these three scientific conferences took place over days, from October 25 to October 26, 2023. The conference was conducted using a hybrid system, combining both offline and online participation. This international forum’s objective was to provide researchers a platform for presenting and discussing collaborative research progress. Apart from that, this forum also served as a means to share experiences and innovative research techniques that have been employed. This event was open to participants from various countries who were interested in language science, literature, and culture.

“This conference is designed to inspire and guide us as we explore uncharted technological territories and the transformative potential within our academic disciplines. The conference serves as a bridge for innovation and collaboration in the fields of language, literary studies, education, arts, and culture, all with the goal of contributing to a sustainable society. However, within this overarching theme, we highlight the important role of technology in advancing our field forward. This was the right form of exploration as a convergence of innovation, collaboration, and technology,” she explained.

Dr. Emy Sudarwati, S.S., M.Pd., the chairman of the International Conference committee, added that this conference aimed to establish a forum for academics.

“The scientific conference forum, both ICOLLEC and ICEL, serves as a forum for the exchange of knowledge among researchers and practitioners. This forum facilitates the establishment of networks among academics with shared interests in the field of sustainable science, and all in pursuit of the advancement of future scientific development,” she added.

In this conference event, reputable speakers, who have a reputation in their respective field in line with the discussed theme, were also invited. For ICOLLEC, the keynote speakers included Assoc.
